Chapter Nine
This will be tough with a stiff leg and useless left arm, but Iâve been through worse. Must get to that scientist fast. Once the building core reboots, guards will be everywhere. Then Iâll be as good as dead.
I use the video feed from Darylâs drones to scan inside the room. Thereâs an interior wall, cutting the room in half. Two guards to the left. My tracker reads another three behind the wall, out of sight. Iâm shot to hell, but I can handle five. For Taniaâs sake I have to.
I keep low and dart inside, heading for the interior wall. Beams of light bounce around the dark room like searchlights, lighting me up. Bullets fly in all directions, smashing apart expensive-looking lab devices, creating a cloud of paper and glass fragments. I thud against the wall with my good shoulder. Pain stabs my damaged leg, despite the drugs. I switch the Corelli from dart to .45 and fire three bullets at a head peering around some kind of freezer. The man cries out and slumps to the ground in the open.
Stay moving, thatâs the secret. Keep them off guard. I fire indiscriminately and roll behind a machine on wheels. A staccato volley of heavy caliber bullets rips apart the side of my hiding place, shredding the metal. Sounds like a damn cannon. I duck and cover my head. The wall behind me fills with fist-sized holes. Fuck, what kind of weapon is that?
A cacophony of clicking sounds and the whirring of fans fills the room. Video screens mounted on the walls and tables power on, flickering with text and images. The overhead lights blaze to life. Shit. A lump settles in my throat. Iâve used up my window of surprise. I locate the security-cams high in the corners and shoot them out. The less others in the building know whatâs happening here, the better.
At the sound of the cannon-thing reloading, I retreat behind another cabinet. My tracker alerts me of enemies moving left and right. My heart hammers. I canât stay here. Theyâre maneuvering to flank me. I scan the room, catching one man breaking cover. He shoots twice, and I send two back at him before he vanishes behind a metal cabinet. While weâre sitting here, they could call up reinforcements. Got to get out of this fast. I pull the railgun from my back. I can fire it one handed â thereâs no recoil â but itâs damn heavy. I grit my teeth. I donât need accuracy; spray and pray will do.
The guy with the cannon pops up and unloads on where I was hiding a moment ago. The heavy automatic fire all but destroys that device. I peek out and fire the railgun. Nothing happens. I jab the trigger. Fuck, the thingâs died on me. What now? I canât go against that cannon with only my Corelli.
A guard appears behind me. Where the fuck did he come from?
âChuck the handguns,â he says.
My mind races as I toss them one at a time into the open.
